讲座内容简介:

This paper examines the effect of remittance income on deforestation in Nepal during the period 2001‒2010 with satellite-based land use data and a nationwide household survey. Results indicate that remittances reduced deforestation almost 10 percent of deforestation that occurred during the study period. An additional one-thousand-Rupee increase in household remittance income slowed down the rate of deforestation by approximately 0.354 percentage points at the ward level. There is no evidence that remittances induced expansion of agricultural land through increased modern inputs use (e.g., irrigation, chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and improved seeds) or stimulated demand for forest products. Instead, remittance income contributed to the shift of households’ demand for timber and fuelwood toward non-wood alternatives such as cement and fossil fuels for housing construction and cooking. These findings draw from a comprehensive data set including high-quality land use data and an extensive national household survey. The estimated effects are robust across a variety of specifications and estimation methods, and add to the evidence base on the interlinkage between development and environment.
